MISSOULA – Alice Ann Renner Thomas was surrounded by her family as she joined our Heavenly Father on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2016. After suffering a stroke in 2010, she experienced many challenges but she had the love and support of her family and friends each and every day.
Alice was born on Dec. 10, 1940, in Hebron, North Dakota, to John Renner and Mary Tkach Renner. She was one of six children – Jim Renner and Eddy Renner, both living in North Dakota and Lawrence Renner, Ernie Renner and Eleanor Renner Meuchel, all deceased.
She grew up near Glen Ullin, North Dakota. During her years in high school, Alice was known as a great fire baton twirler. Shortly after her graduation from Glen Ullin High School, she joined the love of her life, LeRoy Thomas, in marriage on Oct. 17, 1959. In their 56-plus years of marriage, Roy and Alice raised their five children.
In 1966, Montana was extremely fortunate to gain a new family when Roy and Alice moved to Missoula. Following their move they settled in and had many wonderful years experiencing life on Butler Creek and making amazing memories with their Butler Creek “family.”
Alice was an amazing wife, mother and friend. For many years Alice worked outside the home at Van Evans and as a waitress at 4B’s but always enjoyed life to the fullest with one of her most favorite loves being cooking and baking. She loved to collect cookbooks and recipes and she was known for her many Christmas sweet baking creations as well as her infamous German cooking. Anyone who knew her will always remember her common words: “No one ate anything; there is more food so you better eat. Eat up!” Alice always made sure that no one left her home hungry or without leftovers and snacks.
Alice also thoroughly loved the camping and fishing trips she shared with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren. She had two goals for making those times successful ones: catching lots of fish and everyone’s belly being full the entire time. Up until Alice’s stroke, if she wasn’t out on the boat fishing, she was knitting or crocheting new Christmas gifts or betting on her win playing cards, dice or dominoes. Alice always found a way to be the winner. Those who knew Alice also experienced her nurturing love, her ease in telling good jokes and sharing her contagious sense of humor.
