A RUNAWAY ACCIDENT
Little James Sylvis Sustains Serious Injuries
Smarting with terror and increasing its speed at every plunge a horse attached to a light open vehicle dashed madly down Park street at 8:30 o'clock Friday morning, the efforts of its youthful driver to check its wild pace resulted in only frightening it more. The horse and carriage were the property of Mail Carrier Thomas Hopkinson, and the driver was little James Sylvis, the nine-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. William Sylvis, of 131 West Main Street.
When it reached the intersection of Pike street the wheels of the vehicle struck the slightly raised crossing with a jar, over turning the carriage and throwing the boy headlong to the hard frozen ground, where he lay unconscious until picked up and carried to the home of John Wendling. Dr. Neil Hardy was summoned and dressed the injury. The entire left side of his face is horribly bruised and lacerated, one wound extending from the forehead to the chin and so deep as to disclose the bones of the face. Twenty-six stitches were required to close this gash. Opiates were administered to alleviate the little fellow's sufferings and he is now resting easy.
It has been the daily custom of young James Sylvis to accompany Mail Carrier Hopkinson on his route, to watch the horse while Mr. Hopkinson delivered the mail at the houses. What frightened the horse is not known, but it is supposed that it was a C. L. & W. railway locomotive. The carriage was hopelessly ruined by the accident, and the damage will amount to considerable.
