Elmer Brosy, son of Jacob Jr. and Lydia (Ketterling) Brosy was born September 14, 1930 on the family farm four miles west of Wishek. He was baptized November 9, 1930 and confirmed on June 30, 1946. He graduated from Wishek High School in 1948, and attended Ellendale State Normal and Industrial College. He taught country school for Salem District rural Wishek. He then was drafted into the U.S. Marines on December 6, 1951, and was honorably discharged on December 1, 1953. Elmer was obligated to the United States Marine Corp. Reserve until December 5, 1959. Elmer would say, “Once a Marine always a Marine.” Elmer was united in marriage to Gladys Maier on November 25, 1960 at the United Church of Christ, Wishek, ND. They began farming four miles west of Wishek. There were two children born to this marriage, Faye and Kay. Elmer was on the Wishek Hospital Board for nine years. He also drove as a substitute school bus driver for twenty-six years and enjoyed various sporting and music activities throughout these years. He also was active in his church being an usher for many, many years, and enjoyed attending various churches to hear the music and the Word. He also enjoyed his morning coffee and Breakfast at Maggie’s, Prairie Winds, and recently Piccadilly’s. Elmer’s life was truly a grain farmer for over fifty years, and “farmers don’t die, they only go to seed.” He much appreciated the wonderful stewards’ of the land: Kim, Nathan and Tim Rath. Elmer also enjoyed his friends’ company and a hand of cards, taking “educational” trips though North Dakota, and watching his grandchildren grow, Ashlyn, Chandler, Nicholas, and Kayedenn. The past few years Elmer found support from the Bismarck Parkinson’s Support Group. Elmer’s sense of humor will be missed along with his many anecdotal stories and sayings such as “Life is great, if you don’t weaken.”
