Mearice Wills Bulfer, 91, passed away on Nov 25, 2008. She was born in Clinton, Iowa, on Nov 17, 1917. A closed Funeral for family and close friends will be held at the El Camino Memorial Park on Dec 3, 2008. Mearice's husband, who retired from the US Navy as a LCDR, passed away on May 17, 1996. Mearice will be placed next to her husband. Mearice is survived by her three children and five grandchildren.
Mearice's love of life, her personality and positive attitude have forever been instilled in her children, who will always remember her beautiful heart and kindness to all. Mearice graduated in 1939 from Scovill Business College in Clinton, Iowa.
In 1941, she joined the US Army, handling intelligence information. Mearice married her husband, Ensign Joseph Elmer Bulfer on June 10, 1944. In July 1944, she transferred to the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) in Washington, DC, and in Oct 1945, after the end of World War II, she received a special award for exemplary service from the Director of the OSS.
In October, 1946, Mearice transferred to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) until leaving in December, 1947, to pursue raising a family. After traveling to many overseas locations, she and her husband retired in San Diego, CA. Mearice returned to work at General Dynamics Astronautics and then the Civil Service for the State of California.
After retiring in 1983, Mearice volunteered for a couple of local hospitals. In her retirement years, Mearice became involved in sporting events. She was the world's most loyal San Diego Padres fan holding season tickets since 1969.
Mearice had a lifelong passion for supporting our government and our US troops. The family requests that any donations, in lieu of flowers, be made directly to your local chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) or the AMVETS Service Foundation. Published in U-T San Diego on Dec. 3, 2008
