- OBITUARY: MONROE CENTER - Rose Lynette Simsa, 90, of Monroe Center, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004, at Munson Hospice House in Traverse City.Rose was born Sept. 9, 1914, near Buckley, the daughter of Phillip and Clara Almina Hoxie Michels. At age four, when her mother died, Rose was raised by the sisters at St. Francis parish in Traverse City, where she later graduated from St. Francis High School.On July 3, 1935, Rose married Edward W. Simsa, who preceded her in death Oct. 16, 1994.Rose and Edward operated a 200-acre farm involving dairy and fruit orchards, located in Monroe Center. In later years, Rose worked as a cosmetologist, which she considered to be her special hobby. She was an active member of Hannah St. Mary's parish, enjoyed gardening, traveling and attending high school sporting events, and helping the elderly.In addition to her husband, Rose was preceded in death by her three sisters, Margaret Flohe, Fern Bussa and Eva Claire Weber; and a brother, Bernard Michels.Surviving are three sons, Rod (Renate) Simsa, Bryan (Yvonne) Simsa and Royce (Jean Ann) Simsa, all of Traverse City; two daughters, Rodetta (Simsa) Harrand and Colleen Simsa, both of Monroe Center; four grandchildren, Wesley Harrand, Holly (Harrand) Gallagher, Greg (Kay) Simsa and Jeff (Teresa) Simsa; 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and her special friends, Lindsey Lampton, Jim Sarkella and Anna Yanska.Visitation will take place Tuesday, Oct. 5, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley, with a rosary at 7:30 p.m.Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6, at St. Mary's of Hannah Catholic Church, with Fr. Michael Janowski, celebrant.Memorial contributions may be directed to Mass intentions for Rose, or to the Hannah St. Mary's parish.Arrangements have been entrusted to the Covell-Smith Funeral Home, Kingsley.
