Charles E. Russell, age 87, of King, Wis., died on Thursday, September 8, 2011, at Riverside Medical Center in Waupaca.
He was born on August 19, 1924, in Raywick, Kentucky, the youngest of 10 children, to the late Charles D. and Mary (Mitchell) Russell. Charles served his country in the U.S. Navy as a corpsman on the USS Benevolence, and witnessed the signing of the surrender treaty with Japan to end WWII. On August 30, 1944, Charles married Evelyn Amerson in New York, NY. She preceded him in death on July 6, 2010. Charles was a devout Roman Catholic, and had formerly served as lector at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Appleton and was a member of the Monte Alverno Bible Study. He worked as a floor covering salesman for 50 years. Charles was a past member of the Toastmaster Club, and enjoyed ceramics, painting, doing handiwork, and baseball, having at one time coached Little League, and also enjoyed watching the Packers and the Brewers.
Charles is survived by five children, Michael Russell, Madison, WI, Patricia (Charles) Burt, Madison Lake, MN, Eileen (Robert) Lewis, New London, Jane (Dave) Klemp, Appleton and Joseph Russell, New London; 13 grandchildren, Kimberly, Christopher, Shawn, Scott (Stephanie), Steven, Cynthia, Jason, Carol (Matt), Josh (Sarah), David (Carrie), Amy (Kim), Jeremy and Katherine; 10 great-grandchildren, Bailey, Travis, Lydia, Jude, Elaina, Jerome, Charles, Jordyn, Garrett and Austin; two brothers, Ed Russell, Janesville, WI, and Earl (Delores) Russell, Florida; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 13, 2011, at 1:30 p.m. at the Wisconsin Veterans Home Memorial Chapel in King. Father Paul VandenHogen will officiate. Burial with military rites will be in Veterans Memorial Cemetery, King.
