Bio: Albert Huber, in his 95 years of life, worked in a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp as a young man and later with the Works Progress Administration (WPA) during the Depression years when it was rough going trying to make a living. For a time, he and his wife Alice farmed, he operated a gas station in Bowdle and worked as a heavy equipment operator for the Edmunds County highway Department until a work related accident brought early retirement. Not to be stopped, he helped area farmers and managed the Bowdle Landfill. He and Alice were married 68 years, which is almost a record in these parts. Albert died Saturday, May 26, 2007, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. The son of Magdelena (Hoff) and Jacob Huber, Albert was born Oct. 9, 1911, on a farm 11 miles north and a mile east of Leola. At a young age, he moved with his family to a farm six miles southeast of Hosmer where he lived while receiving his education. Following his schooling, he worked at odd jobs and in the CCC. On Nov. 13, 1938, Albert and Alice Eisenbeisz were married at St. John's Lutheran Church in Bowdle. He went to work for the WPA and they settled in Bowdle for several years. They then moved to the Raymond Haar farm three miles southeast of Bowdle and in 1944 to Oregon, where they lived a brief time. They returned to South Dakota where they lived on the Pesicka farm five miles southeast of Bowdle, later moving to the Fred Dollinger farm nine miles southeast of Bowdle. Three years later they moved to a farm they purchased five miles south of Bowdle, living there from 1949 to 1953. In 1953, they moved into Bowdle where Albert owned and operated the Standard Service Station and then took his job with the Edmunds County Highway Department until retiring in 1974.He was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bowdle and the Bowdle Senior Citizens. His hobbies included fishing, pheasant hunting, shooting pool and playing cards. He looked forward to hauling iron with the Aldingers and enjoyed socializing, especially with people who used the landfill, and his friends at the Senior Center. As a son described him, "Dad was an old German who farmed most of his life, laid back, pleasant and he loved company."
