(#2 A border Crossing made by Willie Gress and Mathilda on Oct 1916, Portal, ND. Accompanied by bro Michael Gress. The Residence of Tribune,Sask was provided. No destination provided. The Gress's lived at Comertown, Mt at this time, a son William was b, 17 July 1916.
When the family was living in Marienthal, Saskatchewan, Bill's profession was blacksmithing and later carried the same profession to Comertown, Mt.
The family lived in this village until the family decided to move back to Canada where Bill's first wife passed away late in 1918 or early 1919 from influenza
( Rosemary Mack) Bienfait GRHS volunteer reported from Source Book 1982 Poet's Corner, a history of Lampman, Sk. page # 614-615, Dan (Deneseus) Jale (Yalie) & Rose nee Resler family. They Marr in 1912 Marienthal, Sk. They farmed in the Kingsford district, North of Bienfait, Sk. They had one daughter who died at age 2 1/2 weeks.
In 1919 a cousin of Mrs Rose Jale passed away! (Mathilda Gress) leaving two boys, one an infant Emanual Joseph, a bro William age 2-3. The father brought the boys to Mr. & Mrs. Jale who took care of them. later, the father remarried, he took the oldest boy William with him.
Dan & Rose raised Emanual as their (own.) This however occurred after the census of 1920 at Harvey, ND.
The responsibility of work and family made it necessary placing couple children in foster homes until a house keeper or remarriage could bring the family together. Emanual and William were placed with the Yale/Jale
family. The above paragrah confirm what transpired after Mathilda death.
The last child born was Emanuel Joseph. He was raised and adopted by a Yale/Jale family living in Canada at the time. Mrs. Rose Resler/Jale was a cousin of Mrs.Gress.
About a year later Bill Gress and Anna Heintz were married 10 June 1919 when the entire family family of Bill's first marriage were reunited. See 1920 North Dakota census, Harvey, ND (Submitted by Catherine Schindler).
The census 1920 Harvey, ND indicated William was a teamster operating a dray service at Harvey.
Further research with the Clerk of Court of Sheriden County, Mt revealed the family lived in Comertown, Mt. However the family left without much of a trace. Willie was the only birth there, there were no deaths, voter
registration, naturalization or real estate transactions recorded. One reference was made in a local history book mentioned Bill Gress's profession always kept him very busy.
The county school census of 1916 and 1917 reflected school registration of George b, 31 Oct, 1909, Peter b, 13 Mar, 1911, Anton b, 24 Nov, 1912 Augustina b, 24 Aug, 1914 and Willie b, 17 July 1916. The family was not included in the 1918 Sheridan County, Mt census, or was the birth of
Emanuel Joseph being born in 1918 at Comertown, Mt. The adoption of Emanuel is believed to have occurred after 5 Jan 1920 as he was included in the Harvey, ND census. and before June 1920 when Anna's first child Barbara was born.
I have information on Emanuel being born 3 Sept 1918, we believe in Canada, around Tribune, Sask.
This also has not been confirmed as the birth could have been between June and Sept. But, am pretty positive about Canada as Emanuel's birth location He had to obtain his birth Cert from the Tribune Church when he married. According to his wife Anna.
I have tried confirming this with Emanuel's wife but, was not successful!
