WAGNER, Elizabeth Louise Scheuer Hitchman, died at her home, Top Hole Farm, on February 17, 2008.
She was born in Wheeling on January 18, 1917, the daughter of Andrew and Julia Ebeling Scheuer.
She was preceded in death by both parents; brothers, Ralph Allen and Robert Ebeling Scheuer; her son, William Sherman Hitchman; her first husband, Edward Thomson Hitchman II of Wheeling; and her second husband, Roland A. Wagner of Dayton, Ohio.
She is survived by her sons, Edward Thomson Hitchman, III (Helen,) Robert Reed Hitchman (Stephanie) and William Joseph Wagner (Paul); her brother, William Ebeling Scheuer (Mary) of California; her grandchildren, Edward Thomson Hitchman IV (Becky,) Sarah Beth Hall (Keith,) Laura Courtney Hitchman, Samuel Schories Reed Hitchman, Natalie Claire Wagner and Hannah Katherine Wagner; one great-grandchild, Cordelia Hayden Rose Hitchman; her step-granddaughter, Kerri Ann Greaves; her step-great-grandson, John Robert Greaves; many nieces, nephews and other relatives; and her faithful cat, Muffin.
She was a generous and faithful supporter of many charitable organizations and local institutions. At the time of her death, she was a member of the Save the Redwoods League; Oglebay Civic Garden Center; Wheeling Symphony Auxiliary; Friends of Oglebay; and Oglebay Institute.
Aside from her passion for her family, some of her life's proudest moments were those involving her various business efforts.
One of Mom's favorite business stories involved her employment with Ed's Esso and Parking, Inc. prior to America's involvement in Word War II. Edward Hitchman, then her employer, left to join the war effort and asked her to take care of his fledgling business in his absence. When Ed Hitchman left he merely leased the business premises at the corner of 12th and Water Streets in downtown Wheeling. Due to the efforts of his able manager, Ed Hitchman found that, upon his return from World War II, he now owned the property that he had previously just leased. Being a fairly bright fellow, he promptly proposed marriage to his business manager and future bride, Elizabeth Louise Scheuer.
Mom's business ventures included the Fort Henry Motor Inn of Elm Grove (initially a Quality Courts United member); the Fort Henry Restaurant; the Howard Johnson's Motor Lodge and Restaurant; development of the Fostoria Glass Outlet; Hampton Inn- Wheeling; development of the Bob Evans Restaurant of Wheeling; and Windswept Farms of Lebanon, Ohio.
Mom was particularly faithful to her many loyal employees over the years and would like us to express her deep appreciation for their years of service.
Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, February 21, 2008 at the Kepner Funeral Home, Bethany Pike, Wheeling, where service will be held on Friday, February 22, 2008 at 10 a.m.
Interment in Greenwood Cemetery, Wheeling.
In lieu of flowers, family members respectfully request that contributions be made to Ohio Valley Hospice, 132 Peterson Run Road, Wheeling, WV 26003 or the Triadelphia Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 15 Triadelphia, WV 26059.
