Herman Bertsch

Herman Bertsch, 87, whispered “Oh Take My Hand Dear Father” and the Lord did on 5 August 2010 at a Bismarck Hospital. Services to celebrate his life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 9, at Grace Lutheran Church, McClusky with burial in the McClusky City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Hertz Funeral Home, McClusky.
Herman was born on 27 Jul. 1923 in Willa, ND to Mike and Ida (Doorheim) Bertsch, Baptized 23 Sep. 1923 and Confirmed 4 Jun. 1939. He grew up on a farm near Burt, ND and attended school at Odessa #1 School, #2 in Hettinger County. He married the Love of his Life, Olivia Hochhalter, on 28 Oct. 1945 in Christ Lutheran Church of Burt, ND. Herman made a living for the family by helping to build the Garrison Dam and working in the coal mines in Beulah. They moved to McClusky in 1959 where he farmed until 1994 when he retired and moved into town. Herman enjoyed fishing, playing pinochle, and giving rides in the golf cart. He brightened everyone’s day with his sense of humor and positive attitude.
Together Herman and Olivia raised seven wonderful children. He is survived by his wife; four daughters, Helen Hoffer (Alvin) of McClusky, Sharon Allgor (David) of Dover, DE, Laurel Kukert (Delmer Deceased) , of McClusky, Kathleen Mauch (Terrance) of Bismarck, ND; three sons, Darrell (Rita), Dennis (Kate), all of McClusky, Donald (Claudette) of Rapid City, SD; 16 grandchildren and 25 greatgrandchildren who have the special memory of Grandpa giving them “pocket lint candy” in church.
Herman came from a large family with 21 Brothers and Sisters. There was Jacob, Henry, Bertha, Barbara, Jonathon, William, Regina, Simon, little Ida, Herman, Martha, Viola, Reinhardt, Oscar, Albert, Albertina, Herbert, Rudolph, Esther, Benjamin, Frieda and Theodore. Four of the 22 children lost their lives at an early age, but for many years there were 18 wonderful Bertsch children. Today Herman is survived by 10 siblings, Barbara Sanford, Regina and Fred Sommers, Martha Lake, Oscar and Johanna Bertsch and Theodore all of California, Frieda Winterroth and Herbert and LeeAnna Bertsch of Washington, Rudy and Nita Bertsch of Louisiana and Viola Prischmann of Fargo and Ben and Sharon Bertsch of Taylor, ND . He also is survived by four other sister-in-laws and one brother-in-law, Vicki Bertsch(Jonathon) of Idaho, Gloria Bertsch(Reinhardt) of California, Lydia Hochhalter(Harold) of Bismarck and Delores and Lloyd Sprecker of New Leipzig.
