  [S927] Obituary. William (Bill) Bender, 86, Orange County, Calif., and former longtime resident of Bismarck, passed away peacefully Oct. 12, 2017, surrounded by loving family and caregivers at Lady Marian Care Home. He was born July 1, 1931, to William Sr. and Ann (Klein) Bender of Mobridge, S.D. and grew up on a farm near Tolstoy, S.D. William attended rural grade school and Plainview Academy at Redfield, S.D. where he met his sweetheart and spouse Elsie Dickhaut. They were married on July 1, 1949, at Aberdeen, S.D. and later, five children were added to this union. Douglas, Bruce, Fonda, Joel, and Mary. William and Elsie moved to a farm near Bismarck, where they farmed, ranched, and owned Bender Construction. They sold the farm and moved five miles north of Bismarck, and continued in construction until retiring in 2015. In 1963, William was involved with planning and construction of the Bismarck SDA church, then in 1996 was general contractor for the Mandan SDA church. William also traveled to various states/countries where he was involved in construction including going to Panama to participate in a Maranatha project. William was known for always helping others and was very active in his church. He also enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. One of his favorite hobbies was woodworking. He made wooden tractors, semi's, shelves, rocking horses, etc. William is survived by his spouse of 68 years, Elsie (Dickhaut) Bender; children, Douglas (Ellen) Bender, Bruce Bender, Fonda (Tex) Opp, Joel Bender, and Mary (Henry) DeCouteau; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
