Thomas A. Schehl, 79, died May 20, 2015, after struggling to recover from multiple health issues, including an esophagectomy five years ago. Tom's devotion to family, friends and his unwavering belief in God supported him in his struggles and gave him peace.
Tommy was a leap- year baby, born February 29, 1936 to Alfred and Lillian Schehl in Cincinnati Ohio.
He was dedicated to his Catholic faith, from which he drew lifelong spiritual, emotional and physical strength of will and purpose. He served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Intrepid and later graduated from the University of Cincinnati. He worked as an analyst for Fernault Labs in Cincinnati and moved to Florida in 1966. He worked at Kennedy Space Center in Mass Spectroscopy in the Chemical Analysis Lab at the O&C during the Apollo and Space Shuttle missions. He retired in 2000 and spent his days learning woodwork and crafting furniture for the home.
Tom's blessing and gift to the world was the love he had for family. He dedicated his children to God and encouraged them to share his Catholic faith. He valued independence and frugality, was generous beyond measure, but never imposed value judgments on anyone.
He was a loving father to three daughters and following his marriage to Nicki in 1995, he happily took on the mantle of loving stepfather to her seven children. His parenting style was patience, respect, acceptance and humility. He encouraged all his children and grandchildren to be the best they could be, and he loved them unconditionally. The goal of Tom's travels following retirement was to visit family, whether to attend weddings, baptisms, special events in someone's life, or to build a cabin in the mountains of New Mexico! He and Nicki traveled to his home state of Ohio, as well as Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, Connecticut, Massachusetts, California, and New Mexico -- all for family.
Tom was kind and soft-spoken, and always had time to answer a question or solve a problem. Tom is greatly missed by his loved ones -- family and dear friends -- who now celebrate his life knowing that he is at peace with Our Creator.
Tom is survived by his wife Nicki, his daughters Debbie Hahn, Cindy Dawson and Tracy Beck and their spouses -- who were truly like sons to him: Jim Hahn, Ed Dawson and Jay Beck; stepchildren Teresa Montero and husband Art, Monica Benninghoff and husband David, Naoma Peterson, David Peterson Jr, Richard Peterson and wife Mary Jo, and Donna Peterson; his beloved grandchildren Shannon and Michaela Hahn, Capt. Eddie Dawson and Kristen Tye, Shelby Beck, Jon and Kevin Lemos, Jenna Benninghoff, Kyle and Chloe Peterson, Jacci Kokos, Arielle, Everette, and Tommy Emmons, Mallory and Abigail Moskau, Anna and Brandon Gordon, his great-grandchildren Carly and Alyssa Lemos, Gabriel and Benjamin Hebert, and Aidan Beck -- and Tom's sisters, Mary Jeannette Strittholt, Jacqueline Dreier, sister-in-law Doris Schehl and numerous beloved nieces, nephews and cousins!
He is preceded in death by ex-wife Ruthie Schehl, sister Virginia Corrill, brother Kenneth Schehl, granddaughter Chelsea Beck, stepson Stephen Peterson, and grandson Christopher Benninghoff.
Viewing is Monday, May 25, between 5:30pm and 7:30pm at North Brevard Funeral Home in Titusville. The Rosary will begin at 7pm for those wishing to join the family in prayer.
