Written by Jane A. Anderson
My mother, Bernice Isabel Anderson, was born November 19, 1920, to Charles and Bertha Lawson as their second child at Cliquot, Mo., in the home. She joined the Salem Missionary Baptist Church in her early years, and was saved and baptized there. My mother later joined the Southern Hills Baptist Church in Bolivar and she was the Superintendent of the Intermediate and Young Persons department. She taught the Southwest Baptist College Sunday School Class.
While living in Warrensburg, she became a member of the First Baptist Church and attended church and Sunday school classes as her health would allow. Going to church was always a privilege in my mother's life. She joined the First Presbyterian Church on the Navajo reservation in Chinle, Ariz.
Mom attended grade school in Cliquot, Mo., and graduated from Bolivar High School. She obtained an A.A. Degree in Education at Southwest Baptist University with a B.S. in Education with majors in Business Education and English. She attended Drury University where she majored in Counseling. She earned a Master's degree in Business Education at Central Missouri State University. She earned Post Graduate Credits at Chapman University in Phoenix, Ariz., and Navajo Community University.
My mom began her teaching career at her home school in Cliquot, Mo. She taught at Watson Elementary School. She began teaching Business Education courses and English at Pleasant Hope, Mo. She taught at Mount Vernon, teaching Business Education and Journalism. She taught Business Education, Vocational Education, History, and Journalism. At Bolivar High School she sponsored the school paper "Tiger Tracks? which later became "The Liberator". She taught at Fair Play, Mo., teaching Business Education and English. She also taught Business Education at Cleveland, Okla. She taught Citizenship classes at Warrensburg Junior High. Also she taught typing, shorthand, accounting, and advanced accounting at the Odessa High School. She worked as a financial secretary at the First Presbyterian Church in Warrensburg. She taught reading, language arts, English as a second language and math at the Chinle Boarding School in Chinle, Ariz. She taught at Southwest Baptist University, Central Missouri State University and the Navajo Community University at Chinle, Ariz. She won the Bolivar High School Hall of Fame Distinguished Alumni Award.
My mom married Glen R. Anderson on March 13, 1951. They shared 56 years of marriage until her death on November 10, 2007. My mother had three children, Gayle Anderson, Joey Anderson and Janie Anderson. She had six grandchildren, Elizabeth Sherrer, Nicholas Anderson, Jacob Anderson, Jessica McReynolds, Christopher McReynolds and Joshua Anderson.
My mom was a dedicated wife, parent, grandmother, daughter, teacher and homemaker and was an excellent cook. She helped raise two of her grandchildren, Jessica McReynolds and Christopher McReynolds. One of her greatest pleasures in life was taking care of her grandchildren. She always took the time to play games with them and bake chocolate chip cookies for them. She would always be there to help her family.
The angels took my mother home at 3:18 p.m. Saturday, November 10, 2007, in her home. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Raymond Lawson; two sisters, Hazel Doran and Lois Jean Lawson. Surviving are her husband Glen Anderson; two sons and their wives, Gayle and Candace Anderson, Joey and Julie Anderson; her daughter Jane Ann Anderson; six grandchildren; one great-granddaughter, Kaylee Sherrer; and a sister, Opal Austin.
