Merv was born on March 4, 1931, in Richardton, North Dakota to Dominic and Mary (Roshau) Berger. He was raised and educated in Richardton where he attended St. Mary's Elementary School in Richardton and St. Philip's School in Wibaux County, Montana. In his senior year of high school, he enlisted in the United States Army and served in Alaska and California before his honorable discharge from military service in August of 1952.
Merv married Marlys L. Carter on June 18, 1957 and worked as a top regional salesman for Sears and developed his craft as an upholsterer. Three children were born to this union: Debbie, Rick, and Randy. On December 30, 1977, he married Irene M. Berger. As a couple they resided in Sacramento, California before moving to Glendive in 1991.
Merv was well known for his craftsmanship in upholstery for sixty - one years. His artistic talent extended to building birdhouses, which replicated local elevators or school houses, several of which were donated for benefits or given away. He enjoyed making wood and brass farm implements, listening to bluegrass and Johnny Cash, and keeping in touch with friends and family via social media. He was a self-taught painter and was Artist of the Month at the Gallery in Glendive. An avid 13-card rummy player, Merv taught most all of his grandchildren and great - grandchildren how to play, and they especially enjoyed it when they were lucky enough to beat him. His time spent with family was the most precious part of his life.
Merv was preceded in death by his parents, Dominic and Mary Berger; step-father, William Bruski; brothers, John Bruski, Jerome Bruski, Luke Bruski, and Claydeen Berger and sisters, Lenora Muggli and Eleanor Michels.
Merv is survived by his wife, Irene; children, Deborah Loudermilk of Suisun City, California, Richard (Imsuk) Berger of Seaside, California, and Randall (Kerry) Berger of Cheshire, Oregon; step children, Michael (Betty) Berger of San Diego, California; Mary Kay (Brad) Kountz of Brockway, Montana; Clayton (Sherry) Berger of Glasgow, Montana; Deanna Bockness (Tim Rittal) of Terry, Montana; Patti (Mark) Soares of Belgrade, Montana; Greg (Noreen) Berger of Terry, Montana; and Therese (Mark) Iwaniak of Glendive, sixteen grandchildren and eleven great - grandchildren. Merv is also survived by brothers, Victor (Velma) Bruski, Donald (Joan) Berger; sisters, Florence Miske and Diane (Tom) Schmidt, and sister-in-law, Vivian Bruski.
