Galen Martinson
Galen Robert Martinson, 63, Velva, died Friday, October 12, 2012 in a Rochester, MN Hospital.
Galen was born July 9, 1949 at Minot, North Dakota, the son of Fred and Ella (Schmidt) Martinson. He was raised on the family farm near Benedict and attended country schools near Benedict before graduating from Sawyer High School.
Galen married the love of his life, Gayle Nelson, a graduate of Velva High School on July 24, 1970 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Kongsberg. Living in Minot, they started their family. First born was Robert in 1971, followed by Phillip in 1980. In 1974, they purchased their family farm from Samuel and Dora Skoglund near Velva, where they raised cattle and small grains.
In addition, Galen’s employment included construction and concrete work with Ernie’s Concrete of Minot, ArloWeishaar Concrete of Garrison & Benedict, Don’s Concrete of Benedict and was a member of UMWA local #8957 during employment of Consol Mines of Velva. Most recently he was employed with Archer Daniels Midland of Velva, where he worked twenty-five years as a production shift foreman.
Galen served Bjornson Township for 18 years as a Supervisor.
His dream was to be a gun specialist. He enjoyed spending time with his sons, family, and close friends. Guns, hunting, fishing and the great outdoors were his special times.
Those who shared in Galen’s life include his wife of 42 years, Gayle; sons, Robert (Brenda) Martinson, Simcoe, ND, Phillip (Sarah) Martinson, Benedict, ND; granddaughter, Cheree Schneider of Simcoe; sisters, Andrea (Eric) Klanderman, Fairfax, VA, Judy Sloboden, Ruso, ND, Myrna (Ron) Undlin, Minot; sisters-in-law, Loretta Martinson, Garrison, Joyce Martinson, Burlington, Richard & Darlene(Nelson)Ritter, Venturia, ND; brother-in-law, Curtis (Diana) Nelson, Velva; mother-in-law, Beatrice Nelson, Velva; Aunts ,Viola Bradshaw; Gladys Baluski. God-children, Erin KlandermanLaMont, Broad Run, VA and Kevin Nelson, Velva; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Galen was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Melvin and Leland Martinson, father-in-law, Earl Nelson and brother-in-law, Raymond Sloboden.
Funeral service: Friday, October 19, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. in Oak Valley Lutheran Church, Velva.
Interment: Velva Community Cemetery
Visitation: Thursday from 3:00-7:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot and one hour prior to the service in the Church.
Memorials are preferred to Pheasants Forever, the Souris Valley Care Center in Velva, The Benedict Church of the Sherrie Sloboden Benefit Fund.
