Gladys V. Baluski, 85, Ruso, ND, passed away Sunday, May 15, 2016, at St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck.
Gladys Violet Martinsen was born March 18, 1931, the fourth youngest of 12 children born to Christ and Carrie (Faul) Martinsen, on the farm located in Greeley Township of Ward County, ND. She was raised on the farm and attended country schools in the area. As a young adult, she worked in Minot as a waitress, dishwasher, and cook at a local café and later worked at Minot Laundry.
Gladys married the love of her life, Fred Baluski March 29, 1957, in Minot. They made their home on a farm located in Bjornson Township of McHenry County, west of Ruso, ND, where they farmed, ranched and raised their six sons, James, Dave, Wade, Fred, and twins, Roger and Martin. Being in the milking business and living so far from town, she became very knowledgeable in the care for her animals, especially when they were sick. Gladys, Fred and their six sons had quite the memories in that one-bedroom farm house. Fred Sr. passed away April of 1981.
Following her husband’s death, she continued to reside on the farm. Her son, Roger, later became her caregiver until his passing in October of 2013. Roger enjoyed taking her to Bingo as they were both quite lucky and enjoyed the competition.
There wasn’t much about cooking, baking or canning that she didn’t know about. She was a gentle, down to earth, wonderful loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who could make any dish taste like none other. She was known for her loaves of fresh baked bread, Lefsa, and her raisin caramel rolls.
Gladys’s was a courageous woman who endured a heart valve replacement in 2006 and had been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Her hard work ethic was brought about by a life of hard work, a clear understanding for her God, and a love for her family. Strength, grace, flowery colors and her strong faith defined her.
She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Kongsberg, ND.
Surviving family includes: sons, Dave (Denine) Baluski, Garrison, Wade (Kathy) Baluski, Delano, MN, and Fred (Evonne) Baluski, Ruso;
her grandchildren she adored, Megan Baluski, Nathan (Sarah) Baluski, Angela and Teresa Meyer, Scott (Lori) Steele, Jeff (Megan) Steele, and Cory (Amy) Steele;
great-grandchildren, Carson, Alexis, R.J., Kain, Dylan, Alayna, Elizabeth, Brendon, Jaydon, and Liam; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Fred, Sr.; sons, Martin, James, and Roger; brothers and sisters, Fred, Albert, Hilda, Edwin, Lila, Lloyd, Theadore, Viola, Robert, Darlene, and Martin.
