Edward John Berger, age 84, of Beach, North Dakota, passed away on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Dickinson, North Dakota. Visitation will be held from 1:00 P.M. until 5:00 P.M. and from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. on Thursday, April 24, 2014 at Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home in Beach. A Funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, April 25, 2014 at the Beach Evangelical Church in Beach with Pastor Ben Baker officiating. Interment will be held in the Beach City Cemetery.
Ed was born on February 16, 1930 on the family farm north of Richardton, North Dakota, a son of John C. and Beatrice (Bernhardt) Berger. Ed was raised and educated in Richardton where he attended Assumption Abbey High School graduating with the class of 1948. After finishing high school, Ed attended Dickinson State University in Dickinson for two years receiving his Standard Certificate. Following college, Ed taught in country schools in the Richardton area. He also moved trailer homes for many years. Ed began working for the United States Post Office in Dickinson where he worked over twenty years until retiring in 1990.
Ed married Lois Metz on November 24, 1954 in Dickinson and to this union, three daughters were born; Lynette, Rynell and Shelly.
Ed met and later married Gladys (Klein) Ridenhower on April 8, 1983 in Wibaux, Montana. They made their home in Dickinson until 1992 when they moved to Beach where they were living until the time of Ed’s death.
Ed was a member of the Beach Evangelical Church and a member of the Postal Union. He enjoyed woodworking and making things with his hands. Ed especially enjoyed making dressers and other useful items and giving them away through the House of Manna. Ed was a very caring, loving person and much beloved by family and friends. He especially loved his family and the simple things in life.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents; one sister; three brothers; one infant brother; and one step-son, Jim Ridenhower.
Ed is survived by his wife Gladys of Beach; three daughters, Lynette (Harlan) Thiel of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Rynell Schalesky of Aurora, South Dakota and Shelly (Rod) Mills of Nampa, Idaho; two step-sons, Howard (Linda) Ridenhower of Beach and Gary (Lois) Ridenhower of Beach and Stillwater, Minnesota; three step-daughters, Judy Ridenhower of Beach, Jean (George) Stull of Yankton, South Dakota and Marilyn (Joe) Snyder of Bismarck, North Dakota; sixteen grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren and one great great-grandchild; two brothers, Richard Berger of Dickinson, North Dakota and Victor Berger of Salem, Oregon; one sister Lorraine (Lee) Swanson of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota and numerous nieces and nephews.
