Birth: Nov. 7, 1924
Death: Feb. 13, 2014
Alice Hochhalter died Feb. 13, 2014, in Valley City. She was 89 years old. Alice Marie Stuldreher was born Nov. 7, 1924, in Mandan. She was the youngest of five children of Ludwig Carl Christian Stuhldreher and Roselee (Kennedy) Stuhldreher. As a child Alice performed on the radio with her musical family and was known as Alice the Singing Cowgirl. She attended Mandan High School and graduated from Beauty School in Bismarck.
Alice worked as a beautician in Salem, Bismarck and Mandan. Alice proudly supported the war effort by becoming a genuine “Rosie the Riveter,” welding aircraft carriers at the Tacoma, Wash., shipyard during World War II.
Alice married Walter Hochhalter on Nov. 5, 1948, at her parent’s home in Mandan. The couple farmed and raised their children on the Hochhalter family homestead near Wishek. They provided Kathleen and Rodney with a wonderful childhood full of life’s experiences only found on a small rural farm. Alice balanced her busy farm life with her love of the arts. She was an accomplished self-taught artist, organist and guitarist.
Alice is survived by one daughter, one son, three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Walter; her parents; and her siblings, Mabel Heck, Elsie Wretz, Dorothy Carter and Fredrich Stuhldreher.
