Willie's mother was Christina Flucht who died during a typhoid edipemic in 1881. His father had 6 year old Willie and his 5 year old sister Clara to raise alone, but was unable, and put them in an orphanage in Dubuque, Iowa.
After he remarried, he was able to parent them. Clara became a nun.
Willie married May 1, 1906, and had 5 more children.
