With his parents, four siblings, and other relatives, he sailed on the SS Herder from Hamburg and arrived at New York on October 12, 1880. On January 9, 1883 he married Catharina/Katherine Neuhardt, a fellow ethnic German immigrant from Russia, in the Reformed Church, Menno, Hutchinson County, SD. Six known children were to follow: Jacob, Fred, Pauline, Rosina, Caroline, and Adolph.
