Edgar Max Baer, 76, of Amarillo died Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2006.
Celebration of life services will be at 4 p.m. Friday in Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St., with Linda N. Cook officiating.
On Oct. 10, 2006, Edgar Max Baer passed away unexpectedly at his home in Amarillo.
Born Sept. 29, 1930, in Helena, Ark., Ed grew up in Wisner, La., as a competitive and superior athlete. A championship bowler with a consistent record of perfect games under his belt, Ed went on to set records in Denver running the 100-yard dash in an award-winning 9.9 seconds. Scouted and recruited by the St. Louis Cardinals for a professional baseball career, he found himself suddenly needed by Uncle Sam and went to Korea in service of the U.S. Army.
Before shipping overseas, Ed married Edna Tate, whom he met in Denver. After his release from duty he came to Amarillo to join his wife and new baby daughter, DeNeice.
In 1953 Ed started Amarillo Landscape & Sprinkler with a pair of rusty shears and a pocket full of initiative. By the 1970s, the company had become one of the premier contract landscape and sprinkler firms in the Panhandle. Its high-profile clientele of the day included Northwest Texas Hospital, St. Anthony's Hospital, Dr. Malouf Abraham, Sybil and Don Harrington, Phillips Petroleum, The Bobbins Memorial, The Shores housing development, Rep. Warren Chisum, Amarillo Garden Center, Discovery Center and area ranches, parks, public schools and banks.
As president of the Texas Irrigators Association, Ed formed the water conservation board. He was a pioneer in mid-1980s xeriscaping. Ed introduced the ability to grow sod locally in Amarillo.
Ed was an avid hunter and fisherman and an excellent bridge and chess player. An active spiritual student, Ed was a leader at Unity Church and helped bring Amarillo's first Montessori school to the area.
Survivors include his wife, Edna Ahna Baer; and two daughters, DeNeice Kenehan of San Diego and Kay Martinez of Waco. Ed is also mourned by his grandchildren, Brittain Beam and Conner Beam of Amarillo and Jordan Martinez of Waco.
