Aberdeen - Sister Mary Noel Kuntz, a Sister of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, died on Friday, March 3, 2006, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital, Aberdeen, S.D. She was 85.
The Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Mary Noel will be Monday, March 6, 2006, at 10:30 a.m., in Blessed Sacrament Chapel at Presentation Convent, Aberdeen, S.D. A Scriptural Rosary service will be Sunday, March 5, at 7 p.m. in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m.
Father Joseph Sheehan will be celebrant and give the homily.
Burial will be at the Sacred Heart Cemetery with Spitzer Funeral Home, 320 S.E. Sixth Avenue, in charge of arrangements.
Marie Helen Kuntz was born Aug. 25, 1920, in Richardton, N.D., to Rose (Hockstein) and Jacob John Kuntz. She graduated from Regent Public High School in N.D. in 1940. She entered Presentation Convent Sept. 8, 1942, and made her first profession of vows on Aug. 10, 1945. She graduated from Presentation School of Nursing in 1947 and received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Gonzaga University, Spokane, Wash., in 1954. In 1969 she was certified as a midwife from the Frontier Graduate School of Midwifery in Hyden, Ky. She also studied at St. Louis University, St. Louis, Mo. and John Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md. Sister Mary Noel ministered in our sponsored hospitals, Avera McKennan, Sioux Falls, S.D.; Avera Queen of Peace, Mitchell, S.D.; Avera St. Luke's, Aberdeen, S.D.; and Holy Rosary Hospital, Miles City, Mont. She worked in Bernalillo Co. Medical Center in Albuquerque, N.M. as staff nurse and midwife from 1969-72. She spent two years on the Hopi & Navajo Indian Project in Fort Defiance, Ariz., as midwife and staff nurse and two years in Su Clinica Familiar in Harlingen, Texas. Sister worked as Home Health Director at St. Joseph Hospital, Dickinson, N.D. from 1977-80 and as a volunteer in Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, San Antonio, Texas, as a visitor to the poor. She retired to Albuquerque, N.M. but continued to do home care for the elderly from 2001-04. Sister Mary Noel returned to Presentation convent, Aberdeen, S.D., in 2004. Sister loved to paint and draw in her spare time.
Sister is survived by her community of Presentation Sisters; three brothers, Simon, Hardin, Mont., Val, Belgrade, Mont., Mike, Hardin, Mont., and six sisters, Carol Steiner, Mott, N.D., Freada Wilson, Miles City, Mont., Thelma Klein, Spokane, Wash., Rose Dukart, Dickinson, N.D., Theodora Herner, Wilton, N.D. and Agnes Regnaud, Springhill, Fla. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rose and Jacob Kuntz, and one sister, Elizabeth Steiner in 1999.
Nephews and members of the Aberdeen Knights of Columbus will serve as casket bearers.
