Bart Haynes, 62, of Des Moines, IA died Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at his home.
Graveside services will be held at 11:45 Monday, June 30, 2014 at Graceland Cemetery, with Rev. Katharine Yarnell officiating. Visitation will be at the Foster Funeral and Cremation Center from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Monday.
Bartley Jon Haynes, son of Dr. Carroll and Shirley Dunham Haynes was born February 23, 1952 in Marshalltown. He graduated from Webster City high school in 1970. He served in the U.S. Army - 82nd Airborne Infantry as a Fire Team Leader from 1972 to 1975. He had been awarded the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, the Parachute Badge and the Expert Infantryman's Badge. He received a B.S. in Business Administration in 1979 and a B.A. in Journalism in 1983, both from Iowa State University. Bart had been employed as a staff writer/editor for the Des Moines Register. He wrote entertainment and feature articles. His columns were punctuated with his dry wit and humor earning him several commendations during his tenure there. He also did a stint with USA Today while with the Register.
He is survived by his mother, Shirley; sisters and brothers-in-law, Susan and Brent Erwood and Kim and Tom Shaw, all of Leawood, KS; nephews and nieces, Michael and Graham Erwood, Jonathan, Thomas and Libby Erwood, Jake Shaw, Tessa and Chris Hann and Cara Shaw.
Bart was preceded in death by his father, Carroll.
