Florence Simpson
Florence Sinpson, 85, of Boardman Community Care Center, Youngstown, Ohio, died Wednesday, April 26, 2000, after suffering from Alzheimer's.
Born Dec. 10, 1914, in Homer City, she was the daughter of Cloe Fitzhonts and Anna Sundberg.
Mrs. Simpson was a veteran of World War II, where she served as a Captain in the Army Nurses Corps and received many medals and commendations.
A graduate of Indiana High School in 1932, and the Indiana Hospital School of Nursing in 1936, she was employed by Dr. Fred Shaulis as an office nurse in Indiana. She also was a visiting nurse with the Heart Associations of Indiana and Jefferson counties.
She was a 30 year member of the Boardman United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Martha Circle of the church; Meals on Wheels volunteer, volunteer nurse for Mahoning County, Ohio; the Red Cross Blood Mobile; member and executive director of Girl Scouts of America headquarters and an active member to the Indiana Hospital Alumni Association.
She was the executive director of the Indian County Tuberculosis and Cancer societies.
She received a commemorative medal from Yuli M. Voronstov, ambassador of the Russian Federation to the United States and was the chief nurse to the 19th field hospital during World War II in the Persian Gulf.
She married Lt. Co.. Raymond I. Simpson Oct. 1, 1937.
Surviving are her half-brother,Charles Risinger, Glenwood, Iowa, and a half-sister, Mrs. Gladys Ramsey, Coudersport.
She was preceded in death by a half-brother, Harold Risinger and sisters Mabel Statmiller and Katherine Gilliand.
Friends were received Friday,April 28 prior to the service at the Boardman United Methodist Church in Youngstown, Ohio, with the Rev. Sharon Carson officiating. Interment was made in the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville. (bio by: hhwagner)
