**************
Maria Katharina Baas, listed in some records as "Katharine Boss or Boas," was born to Georg Adam Baas and Katharina Magdalena Hamann of Winzeln, a village near Pirmasens in today's Rheinland-Pfalz (then a part of the Kingdom of Bavaria).
She was born 13 September 1803 and was raised in Winzeln, although she claimed in census records to have been born around 1806. There, she married Heinrich Wolf I on 24 January 1831, and gave birth to Heinrich Wolf II on 29 June 1832 in Winzeln, Pfalz, Bavaria. She and her family came to the United States in late 1832 or 1833. Her siblings primarily settled in eastern Indiana and Cincinnati, Ohio. Around this time, she was married to Jakob Schmitt, whereafter they moved to Cincinnati and later Young Township, Jefferson County, PA, where Jakob's family had settled in 1833. She was the mother of ten children by Jakob Schmitt, all of whom but her eldest son were born in Young Township. Her son Heinrich Wolf II, also known as Henry Wolf, died near Anita in 1873.
Katharina was one of the earliest members of the Punxsutawney German Reformed Congregation and was interred at the old cemetery on 4 July 1895. At the time, relatives thought her to be somewhere between 91 and 95 years old*. A note transcribed from the minutes of German Reformed Church states that she was born in the month of September, which was accurate. —J.D. Smith, descendant
