Eleanor Schmidt, 88, Dickinson, died Sunday, December 9, 2012 at the St. Luke's Home, Dickinson. Eleanor's Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, December 13, 2012 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Dickinson, with Fr. Keith Streifel as the celebrant. Interment will take place at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., with a rosary and vigil at 6:30 p.m., at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson, with Deacon Bob Zent presiding.
Eleanor Stroh was born September 29, 1924 in a rock house at Manning, the daughter of Raphael and Klementina (Keller) Stroh. She received her 8th grade education in a country school.
Eleanor was united in marriage to Anton "Tony" Schmidt on April 28, 1945 in Cleveland, Ohio where Tony was recovering from wounds he received in the army. Their ceremony took place at the Crile General Hospital in Cleveland.
They made Dickinson their home where she worked as a drapery seamstress for Schilla Hardware, Jerry's Furniture, and Alan's Decorating, for a total of 39 years, retiring in 1999, following the death of Tony on September 17, 1999.
She was a life member of the DAV auxiliary and St. Anthony Club for over 50 years, volunteered at St. Benedict's Health Center, St. Luke's Home, Evergreen, and the Arcade. She was a member of the Red Hats Society, St. Anne's Altar Society, Sunset Senior Center, Dickinson Singles, and Community Catholic Quilters. Eleanor loved to play cards, taught and participated in quilt workshops, an avid traveler of mystery tours, and visiting her children. She was a member of Quilters on the Prairie, and founding member of water aerobics and active in for 28 years, and Circle S Sewing Club. Enjoyed dancing, was a Blue Bird leader, a Jr. Catholic Daughter leader, and participated in Dickinson's 75th Jubilee.
Eleanor is survived by four children, LaVerne E. (Jerome) Heinz, El Paso, Texas, Patricia E. (John) Palachuk, Selah, Wash., Dennis A. (Kay) Schmidt, Richland, Wash., and David A. (Patricia) Schmidt, Moscow, Idaho; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters (Louise Faller and Eva Kilzer, Dickinson); and two sisters-in-law (Betty Stroh, Bismarck and Cecelia Stroh, Dickinson). She was preceded in death by Tony; her parents; three sisters (Monica Froehlich, Clem Svetenko, and Josephine Hartman); and four brothers, (Martin, Sebastian, Peter and Nick Stroh); and Leo Messmer.
