Jack Hopfauf, 74, 2026 Old Red Trail, Mandan, died April 29, 1999, in a Black River Falls, Wis., hospital of an apparent heart attack while on vacation. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Albert Leary officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation begins at 9 a.m. Monday, at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with the Catholic Daughters rosary at 4:30 p.m., Knights of Columbus rosary at 7 p.m., and followed by the parish vigil at 7:30 p.m.
Jack was born May 4, 1924, on the family homestead in Fallon. He worked on the family farm with his parents John and Wilhelmina (Hellman) Hopfauf. He married Margaret Ferderer on Oct. 26, 1948. They farmed during the early years of their marriage, celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in 1998. They moved to Mandan in 1951, where Jack worked as a carpet layer for Dakota Flooring, he also worked as a cream truck driver and began to build homes in 1953. He continued in the home construction business until he retired in 1980. Jack was a founding partner in Developers, Inc. specializing in land development, real estate and home building.
Jack enjoyed his retirement years a car restorer, specializing in VW Beetles. During his teen years, he was an avid accordian player in the Happy Jack Orchestra. His musical talents included playing the piano and drums. He also drove the school bus for the Mandan Public School System.
Jack loved to socialize with people, playing cards, square dancing and gardening. Jack was a member of Christ the King Parish, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, Mandan Moose Club and Eagles. He was also a member of the Bismarck-Mandan Home Builders Association, where he received many awards. He received the Life Spike in the N.A.H.B. Spike Club. He enjoyed his daily 7:30 a.m. coffee club gathering.
He was a "Jack of all trades" as he always said he could fix anything, except cracked glass and a broken heart. As a family man, he was very proud of his nine children and was loved dearly by his wife and family.
One of Jack's favorite sayings was, "I have heaven on earth."
He is survived by his wife, Margaret; five sons and four daughters-in-law, John and Mel, and Brad, all of Mandan, Dwight and Lynn, Oak Creek, Wis., Scott and Kareen, Bismarck, and Dean and Michelle, Belmont, Mich.; four daughters and one son-in-law, Jacque and Larry Hahn, Grand Island, Neb., Laura Helbling, Mandan, Marlys Hopfauf, Bismarck, and Mary Mieras, Sebastian, Fla.; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; one brother, Richard, Wilton; and four sisters, Rose Helbling, Winston, Ore., Hildegard Klos, San Diego, Calif., Ann Frank, Underwood, and Veronica Hopfauf, Bismarck.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ralph and Joseph and one sister, Josephine Stein.
Jack, we love you and we'll miss you.
