Walter Hochhalter was born October 17, 1920 in McIntosh County near Wishek, ND. He was the son of Jacob and Christine (Klooz) Hochhalter . Walter attended rural school and graduated from Wishek High School. On December 29, 1944 he was drafted into the Army. He served in the Pacific Theater, Philippians. He was honorably discharged October 15, 1946 and returned to the family farm, becoming the third generation of Hochhalters to farm the original 1904 homestead. On November 5, 1948, Walter married Alice Stuldreher at her parent's home in Mandan, ND. He was respected by his peers for being a successful farmer. He was a steward of the land and the animals he cared for. He shared his love and knowledge of nature, hunting and fishing with his children and friends. Walter was a life time member of the United Church of Christ, serving in various positions. He also was a life time member of the American Legion.
Walter died Friday, January 18, 2013 at the Wishek Living Center, Wishek, ND. He was 92 years old.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, sisters and brothers, Magdalena Krein, Sam, Emma Bader, Henry, Jacob J., Lydia Mehlhoff, Martha Docter, Ted, Edwin, Anna Mehlhoff, John, Edward, Art and Ervin.
