Christoph was born in Steinweiler, Germany and married Barbara Sinn on November 25, 1880 in Steinweiler. Christoph and Barbara sailed from Le Harve, France, on the ship St. Germain, arriving in New York on March 2, 1882, with their infant daughter Elizabeth. They first settled in Jordan Township, Whiteside County, Illinois. In 1885, they moved to Woonsocket, South Dakota and stayed for nine years. Due to dry weather they had only one good farming year, so they came back to Illinois in November 1894. Christoph bought a farm in Palmyra Township, Lee County, Illinois in 1909 for $150 an acre - 143 acres. (From notes by Paul L. Hummel)
