Wenzel Cermak, 85, Mandan, died peacefully with his family on July 14, 2004, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 17, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Patrick Schumacher officiating. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a parish vigil and rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.
Wenzel was born Nov. 20, 1918, in Mandan, the son of James and Mary (Mrnak) Cermak. He was raised and educated on the farm south of Mandan. On Nov. 19, 1940, he married Minnie Wetzstein in St. Anthony. She died on April 30, 1968. They farmed on his homestead and later worked at a local grocery store before buying Circle Food in Mandan on April 6, 1949. He married Kathryn Ehreth in August 1972. Wenzel retired in 1978.
He was an active member of St. Joseph's Church, Knights of Columbus (where he had been an honorary knight), Elks, Eagles and Moose clubs.
Among his interests, he enjoyed bird watching, woodworking, watching his sons play softball, bowling and gardening. He also enjoyed sharing stories with his many friends and family.
He is survived by his wife, Kathryn; two daughters and sons-in-law, Phyllis (Don) Larson, Sterling, Colo., and Marilyn (Mark) Bittner, Fargo; four sons and daughters-in-law, Butch (Deanie) Cermak, Mandan, Kelly (Becky) Cermak, Bismarck, Randy Cermak (and special friend Gayle Ciavarella), Huff, and Todd (Missy) Cermak, Fon du Lac, Wis.; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sister-in-laws, Ann Cermak and Anna Marie Michlitsch; one sister, Nettie Zent; three step-daughters, Kathy (Ken) Brinster, Betty (Ken) Woods and Bobbie Weber; seven step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Minnie; one brother, Ernest; and three sisters, Nancy Shimek, Mary Fink and Caroline Vojescek.
The family prefers memorials and donations to St. Joseph Catholic Church Trust Fund.
