Obituary Bismarck Tribune (Feb 13, 2007)
Ida Zander, 89, Mandan, died Feb. 10, 2007, at Benedictine Living Center, Garrison, where she had been a resident for two weeks. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Patrick Schumacher as celebrant. Burial will be in Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a Catholic Daughter rosary will be said at 4 p.m. followed by a parish vigil at 7 p.m. Visitation will also be held one hour before the service at the church.
Ida, the only daughter of John and Gertrude (Schmidt) Gustin, was born Dec. 22, 1917, in Morton County and grew up in the St. Anthony area with nine brothers. She married John Zander on Oct. 22, 1940, at St. Vincent's Catholic Church, Crown Butte. They enjoyed a blessed life together, raising their family of nine children in Mandan. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2000 and in 2003 they moved to an assisted living facility in Bismarck.
After raising her family and caring for her aged mother until her death, Ida worked as a housekeeper at Heartview for 10 years and liked interacting with the people there.
A joy for Ida and John was traveling together to see family as well as national and international sites. Memorable trips included visits to Germany to visit a son and family.
Ida's love for life was shown through her generosity, gratitude and warmth of spirit. Family was an important aspect of her life. She loved to host family gatherings and found joy in making quilts and afghans for her children and grandchildren. Playing cards and spending time with friends were also favorite pastimes. Ida took pride in being a 50-year member of Catholic Daughters, was a member of the CDA Mission Sewing Group and loved being a part of St. Joseph's Parish. She continued to worship there as she was able.
Ida will be dearly missed by her two daughters, Sister Janet, Bismarck, and Nadine (John) Jojade, Hayward, Wis.; seven sons, Terrance (Bonnie), Bismarck, Greg, Fort Collins, Colo., Arno (Martha), Needham, Mass., Patrick (Sandi), Forestberg, S.D., Leon (Beth), Bismarck, Charles (Joan), Berthoud, Colo., and William (Karla), Mandan; her 16 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Local sisters-in-law surviving her are Rose Gustin and Veronica Zander, both of Bismarck, and Elizabeth Leingang, Mandan.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her nine brothers and seven sisters-in-law, Ralph and Anna, Tom and Kate, Lawrence and Margaret, Nick and Emilia, Father Arno, John and Minnie, Mike, Joe and Kathleen and Frank and Rosemary; her daughter-in-law, Carol; and her husband, John, who died in March 2003.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Joseph Trust Fund.
