DICKINSON -- Raymond A. Kilen, 76, Dickinson, died Jan. 21, 2003, at his home. Services will be held at 10 a.m. MST Friday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Dickinson, with the Rev. Austin Vetter, celebrating. Burial will be at a later date at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, south of Mandan, with the Dickinson Veterans Drill Team providing military rites.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. MST today at Stevenson-Mischel-Olson Chapel, Dickinson, with a rosary at 7 p.m. MST.
Raymond, a son of Carl and Frances (Drury) Kilen, was born Nov. 25, 1926, in Curlew, N.D. He grew up and attended schools in the Almont, Curlew and Sims areas. Ray began working at an early age with the Northern Pacific Railroad as a section hand. He entered the U.S. Army on March 6, 1945, serving until Nov. 26, 1946. On Aug. 3, 1953, Raymond married Anna Marie Armbrust at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Raymond returned to Mandan where he worked as a fireman for Northern Pacific Railroad. In 1965, the family moved to Dickinson and had made their home there since. In the early 60's, Raymond was promoted to engineer and continued working for Northern Pacific and Burlington Northern until his retirement in 1988.
He was a member of the Elks, Eagles, VFW, American Legion, Forty& Eight, St. Anthony Club, Odd fellows, Sons of Norway, Friday Nite Gang and St. Patrick's Catholic Church.
He enjoyed as well as being a very accomplished musician with the ability to play many instruments. Not only was Raymond an avid fisherman but he also loved teaching his grandchildren the sport. He found enjoyment in playing cards, rodeos, baseball, woodworking, spending the winter months in Arizona and restoring his '46 Oldsmobile.
Raymond will be greatly missed by his wife, Anna Marie, Dickinson; two daughters, RayAnn Kilen, Dickinson, and Sandra (Eldon) Rohde, Halliday; his grandchildren, Emily (Melvin) Albert, Fargo, Elizabeth, Luke, Carl, Riley and Tanner; five sisters, Mavis Voracek, Fargo, Florence Nagle, Mandan, Grace Smith, Almont, Etheleen (Burton) Hoovestal, New Salem, and Charlotte (Edward) Thiel, Almont; three brothers, Virgil (Lorraine) Kilen, New Salem, and Thornton (Caroline) Kilen and Tharen (Mary) Kilen, all of Mandan; and one sister-in-law, Helen Kilen, Mandan.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Norman Kilen.
