MENNO — Raymond L. Roth, age 87, of Menno, S.D., passed away at his home on Tuesday, March 24, 2009.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 27, 2009, at Grace Lutheran Church, Menno, with Rev. Brad Danielson officiating.
Burial will be in the Menno Cemetery.
Visitations will be 2-9 p.m., Thursday, March 26, 2009, with a 7 p.m. prayer service at the Aisenbrey-Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home, Menno. Visitations will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.
Pallbearers will be Landon Nusz, David Flicek, Keith Smith, Daniel Mehlhaf, Charles Mehlhaf, Duane Mehlhaf, Dale Mehlhaf and Rano Kirschenman. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren, Christa and Joshua Roth.
Raymond Lenhard Roth, son of Theodore and Lydia (Huber) Roth was born August 23, 1921, on the family farm southwest of Clayton, S.D., in Hutchinson County. Raymond was baptized September 18, 1921, and confirmed July 4, 1937. Both rites were performed by Rev. Gustor Janzig at the Evangelical Lutheran Einigbert (Unity) Church at Wolf Creek, S.D.
Ray was united in marriage with Caroline Mehlhaf at Zion (Kassel) Reformed Church on November 15, 1964, with Rev. Herman Mensch officiating. This union of 44 years was blessed with one son, Mark. Ray received his elementary education at Kapsch School District #48 in Hutchinson County and took a semester course at the Freeman Academy in Freeman, S.D. Ray was a lifetime member at Unity Lutheran Church and served as a deacon, treasurer and usher. He was also a director of the Emery-Clayton Township Fire Department and presently on the Lower James Water Project District.
Ray and Caroline joined Grace Lutheran Church in 1997 after the closure of Unity Lutheran Church. Ray was a devoted husband and father who cherished his son Mark and daughter-in-law Stacy. His grandchildren, Christa and Joshua, were his delight.
Ray lived and worked on the family farm with livestock as his lifetime occupation until 1988, when he and Caroline moved to Menno. He continued helping his son on the farm until his health failed. He enjoyed the outdoors, nature and wildlife. Ray loved to reminisce about his travels and he had a keen mind to remember points of interest and routes.
He is survived by his wife Caroline; son Mark and his wife Stacy; grandchildren, Christa and Joshua; sister, Frieda (Herbert) Tollifson; brother-in-law, Elmer (Gladys) Schamber; nieces: MarJean Schamber Boettcher and June Nusz and husband David Flicek; nephew, Landon Nusz; nephew-in-law, Keith (Janet) Smith; great nieces and nephews: Lanadawn Nusz, Karina Smith, Carlonda Smith, Carolyn Smith, Keith Smith, Keland Smith and Grant Flicek; aunt, Melitta Huber; Caroline’s family plus a host of relatives and friends.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Lorraine Roth Schamber and infant sister, Viola, brother-in-law, Alton Nusz, nephew, Lane Nusz, niece, Carolyn Nusz Smith, great-nephew, Sean Boettcher and nephew-in-law, David Boettcher.
