George L. Berger was born June 7, 1927, in Dickinson to Raphael Berger and Matilda Lantz, the third youngest of 13 children. He grew up on a farm in south Dickinson, attended country school, and joined the Army at the age of 19. George served as Sergeant from April 1946 to August 1947 and received a World War II Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal following time served in Japan.
On November 4, 1948, George married Rosemary Fisher at St. Joseph’s Church in Dickinson. They had six children together, Don, Darrell, Gerard, Laureen, Kathy, and Leon. After a short period of working in watch repair, jewelry sales, and electrical work for others, George started his own company in 1960, Berger Electric, made insulation for distribution throughout the United States and worked as a Master Electrician for 33 years.
George cared about the community and served as a Stark County Commissioner for 20 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the NRA.
George retired in 1993 and enjoyed spending time with his family, friends, and engaging in many hobbies. He loved to fish, hunt, trap, and took care of his horses and pigs at his and Rosemary’s farm north of Dickinson. George rarely missed daily coffee with his friends, learned how to use the computer and became a champion Solitaire player. George read every Louis L’Amour book in print, twice or more. Finally, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, teaching many of the grandkids to fish, ride horse, build things.
George was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Leon, seven brothers, Leo, Al, Ray, Mike, John, Gabriel, Valentine, and five sisters, Tillie Nielson, Sister Angeline Berger, Marie Kilwein, Barbara Gress, and Perpetua Berger.
In lieu of flowers, memorials would be preferred to the “Pine Room Renovation” at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
