Margaret Johnson Hair, of Waco, passed away Monday, February 16, 2015, just shy of her 94th birthday. Her memorial service will be at 3:30 p.m., Monday, February 23, at St. Catherine Center Chapel with the Rev. Rebecca Hull officiating. She will be interred beside her late husband, Robert, in Arlington National Cemetery, in Alexandria, Virginia.
Margaret, known by her friends as Peg, was born in New York City, New York, to the late Victor Emmanuel Johnson and Anna Johnson. Peg's parents both came from Sweden via Ellis Island to America, where they later met and married. New York City was where Peg grew up, was educated and also where she met and married Robert Matthew Hair. He was a career Army officer who was a veteran of both World War II and the Korean War. She and their two daughters accompanied him during his assignments when possible, living in Japan and Alaska, finally settling in Maryland. In later years she moved to Waco, Texas.
Peg and Rob loved traveling, seeing new places, eating different foods and enjoying interesting new experiences. They traveled from coast to coast a half a dozen times. This included classic car trips with two kids in the back seat and many pictures in front of various state greeting signs. They also visited Canada, Mexico, and Central America, but their favorite travels took them on several extended trips to Europe and on multiple cruises. They were blessed to be able to be together to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in Maryland with their friends and family.
Over the years, Peg has been a Brownie leader and Girl Scout leader, as well as a hospital volunteer. She also worked on various programs at different schools, charities, organizations and churches while she could. For years she worked in the office of ophthalmologist, Dr. Ehrlich, and they remained friends ever since. She always loved to read and enjoyed sharing books with others. It would surprise most of her friends to know she only had vision in one eye. She also enjoyed crossword puzzles and frequently did them with a pen. She has been an avid bridge player for over half a century and recently took up dominoes. Until the end, she liked to bake little goodies or give cookies or candy to her friends and those important people who helped her so often at Providence Park and dialysis.
She was a lifelong Lutheran, who more recently attended Woodway First United Methodist Church. She was very supportive of their activities, especially Wacky Wednesdays when her granddaughter was involved. Peg was very proud of the accomplishments of her daughters and both of her grandchildren. She was always interested in what they were doing and delighted in getting news about them and their activities. She talked about Rachel and Amanda often.
Peg was a real fighter who conquered multiple bouts of cancer, as well as years of renal dialysis. When walking became difficult, she started using a cane. As time went on when that was difficult, she started using a walker and more recently, a wheel chair, but she never complained and just kept going forward and living her life with dignity and grace. She touched a lot of lives and will be sorely missed.
She was preceded in death by her husband, U.S. Army CWO Robert Matthew Hair; and her brother, Sven Johnson.
Survivors include her daughters, Dr. Barbara Margaret Hair and husband, Jack Rochelle, of McGregor, Texas, and Alison Jane Scheffer and husband, Dennis, of Maryland; grandchildren, Rachel Rochelle, and Amanda Pritchard and husband, Jason; other relatives and many friends.
