Staff Sergeant Jacob H. Kemmerling, US Army, New Harmony who would have been 36 years old last Sunday, died of pneumonia on Luzon in the Philippine Islands on August 15, the day after the annoucement of Japan's agreement to surrender. Death came to the Posey county soldier on the eve of departure for the States of several of his Posey county comrades in the 163rd Field Artillery, 38th division. Staff Sergeant Kemmerling was a member of Battery E, Posey National Guard unit, when it was activated in January, 1941. The deceased was a member of one of Posey county's most prominent families. He was the son of the late Jacob Kemmerling and Susan Faul Kemmerling. Following graduation from New Harmony high school, where he was a basketball player he engaged in farming. He was unmarried. Survivors are two half-brothers, Charles M. Kemmerling and Oliver Kemmerling New Harmony and three half-sisters, Mrs. Mayme Kramer, Evansville; Miss Anne Kemmerling, Minneapolis; and Mrs. J. Ed Meyer, Mobridge, S. Dak.
Poseyville News dated October 15, 1948:
Military rites for S/Sgt. Jacob H. Kemmerling, 36, New Harmony Gold Star, will be held at 2 o'clock Friday in the Methodist church. Rev. R.J. Skelton will officiate and the New Harmony American Legion Post will be in charge of rites at the grave in Stewartsville cemetery. Posey county members of the 38th Cyclone division will serve as pallbearers. Sgt. Kemmerling succumbed to an illness of pneumonia Aug. 15, 1945, while on Luzon Island, the day after the surrender of Japan. He was the son of Jacob Kemmerling and Susan Faul Kemmerling. Surviving are two brothers, Charles M. Kemmerling and Oliver Kemmerling, of New Harmony; and two half-sisters, Mrs. Mayme Kramer, Evansville, and Miss Ann Kemmerling, Minneapolis.
