John I. Sheaffer, 98, 620 N. Ottawa Ave., died May 26, 1980 at Heritage Square Home following a short illness.
He was born May 14, 1882, in New Holland, Penn., the son of Henry and Elizabeth (Schlough) Sheaffer. He married Elizabeth Hummel Nov. 25, 1909. She preceded him in death in 1937. He then married Elsie Drew in 1940. She also preceded him in death in 1957. A son also preceded him in death.
He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Kathryn Butterbaugh, Dixon; and three sons, Harold, Dixon; Robert, Forreston; and J. Erwin, Sterling; a stepson, Alva Drew, Dixon; 15 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.
He farmed in Palmyra Township until his retirement. He was a member of the East Jordan United Methodist Church. He was director of Sugar Grove School and Lee County Farm Bureau, and also vice president of the latter organization. He was also supervisor of Palmyra Township and Palmyra town clerk and a precinct committeeman and a member of the Dixon Men's Garden Club.
Funeral services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at the East Jordan United Methodist Church with the Rev. Paul Bollman, chaplain of Heritage Square, officiating. Interment will be at the East Jordan Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 3-9 p.m. with the family present from 7-9 p.m. at Chapel Hill Funeral Home. A memorial fund has been established to Heritage Square.
