Obituary Bismarck Tribune (May 07, 2009)
John Sturn, 86, was taken to be with our Lord at his home in Mandan on May 6, 2009, surrounded by his loving family. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:30 p.m. Friday, May 8, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Patrick Schumacher as celebrant. Burial will be at Mandan Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. today at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with a Moose Ritual at 6:30 p.m. and Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7 p.m. followed by a parish vigil. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.
John was born Aug. 26, 1922, the fourth of 11 children to George and Katherine (Hatzenbuler) Sturn at their homestead near New Salem. He attended rural school in that area. On Oct. 28, 1946, he married Katie Hopfauf at the Crown Butte Catholic Church. To this union, four children were added, Carlene, Karen, Elaine and Kevin. John and Katie farmed in the Crown Butte area, moving to Mandan in 1954 when Carlene started school. John worked for Cloverdale Foods for 20 years. Following the strike in 1977, he went to work for Sweetheart Bakery for six years, retiring from the Teamsters Union in 1983. After his retirement, John helped Katie with her in-home day care. The children were very fond of "Papa John." He and his brothers and sisters were taught to love and serve God. John practiced this his entire life. He attended mass regularly until his poor health kept him from doing so.
John was a life-time member of the Knights of Columbus, a member of the Eagles for over 50 years and a member of the Moose Club. He was also a member of the St. Anthony, St. Vincent and New Salem Verein's. John belonged to the Musicians Association and enjoyed playing drums in a local old time band, the Collins Avenue Kings. He delivered Meals on Wheels for the Retired Senior Citizen Program for many years, always with a smile and a friendly face to each homebound person on his route. John enjoyed playing cards, attending many card parties with Katie. He liked fishing and watching sports, especially the Minnesota Twins. His children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his pride and joy. He cherished all the time they spent together. John was hard working, but gentle and soft spoken. Loving and generous, he always had a positive attitude and believed the best about anyone. He will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Katie, Mandan; three daughters, Carlene (Mick) Cremers, Bismarck, and their children, Angie, Sara and Stacy; Karen (John) Huddleson, Mandan, and their children, Jani and Johnny; Elaine (Darell) Schlosser, Glendive, Mont., and their children, Gabriel, Tara, Telecia and Tyler; one son, Kevin Sturn, Mandan; two brothers, Matt Sturn, Bismarck, and Frank Sturn, Mandan; five sisters, Lizzie Geiger and Ann Doll, both of Mandan, Caroline Eggers and Rose Doll, both of New Salem, and Pauline Cushman, Mandan; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews and his special pal, Toby.
John was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Ralph, George and Philip.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Medcenter One Hospice or St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mandan.
Thanks to Dr. Lange, Connie, and Hospice Staff for all of their care. Also thanks to Rev. Schumacher and Tammy Bullinger.
