Marlene was born December 7, 1941 to Jacob and Mathilda (Schmidt) Friesz of Flasher, ND. She graduated from Mandan High School in 1960, and then worked as a telephone operator in Bismarck, ND. She later moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in California where she attended cosmetology school, and worked as a cosmetologist until she married Edward Zaharis in 1977. Ed and Marlene lived on the family property in San Ramon, CA and later in Tracy, CA. She worked as a medical assistant, as a convalescence caregiver, and served as President of the Tracy Women's Club, volunteering in the community until Ed's death in 2002. Marlene then moved to Red Lodge, MT where she enjoyed cooking, sightseeing, photography, painting and spending time with her friends and family. She will be remembered for her warm and generous heart, her sense of humor and her kindness towards others.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Edward Zaharis.
Marlene's family would like to thank the physicians and staff at Frontier Cancer Center, St. Vincent's Hospital and Rocky Mountain Hospice, all in Billings, MT; and at St. Vincent Healthcare Mountain View Clinic and Beartooth Billings Clinic in Red Lodge, MT for their care and support over the past few years. We would also like to thank the Ladies of the Christian Service Outreach Program in Red Lodge, MT and her many friends for their prayers and support.
