Obituary for Phyllis Marie Hieb
The funeral service for Phyllis Marie Hieb, 88, of Aberdeen, SD will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, April 30, 2016, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church with Pastor Kevin Bergeson officiating. Burial is at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Aberdeen. Phyllis died Tuesday, April 26 at Sun Dial Manor, Bristol, SD.
Visitation will be from 1:00 to 7:00 p.m., Friday, with family present from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home Fellowship Hall, 1111 South Main Street.
Phyllis Schmidt was born November 10, 1927, to Ludwig and Clara (Lacher) Schmidt on a farm near Trail City, SD. She later moved with family to Hosmer where she lived until 1997. She attended school in Hosmer where she graduated in 1946. She taught country school for two years.
She married Herbert E. Hieb on November 16, 1947 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hosmer, SD. Together they farmed southeast of Hosmer for 50 years. They retired in 1997 and moved to Aberdeen. She was most recently a resident at Sun Dial Manor in Bristol, SD.
Phyllis was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church for almost 50 years and was currently a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. During those years she was active in the church, serving as a Sunday school teacher for 33 years and teaching confirmation as well . Phyllis was active in local and conference WELCA, serving as President of the Conference and local ALCW. She served on Synod boards and committees for many years including Synod Council, Commitment to Mission, and Mission Partners. She loved quilting at church for Lutheran World Relief. She led Bible Study for the older women of the church and also at the Hosmer Senior Citizens Home.
Grateful for having shared her life are her four daughters: Joy (Darrel) Huft of Renton, WA, Londa (Curt) Dahlke of Jacksonville, FL, Connie (Jerry) Drees of Aberdeen, SD, and Vickie (Terry) Vellek of Sioux Falls, SD; ten grandchildren: Matt Huft, Cara (Huft) Werner, Paul Dahlke, Sheena (Dahlke) Logan, Jordan Drees, Jeremey Drees, Zachary Drees, Abbie (Drees) Batty, Matthew Vellek, and Mark Vellek; and eight great-grandchildren: Leroy Werner, Owen Werner, Chance Werner, Anneliese Huft, Mills Logan, Natalie Drees, Camden Vellek, and Carsen Vellek. Survivors also include one brother, Fr. Sebastian Schmidt, three sisters: Deloris Choven, Maggie Carroll and Cathy Parks.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband Herbert; her parents, Ludwig and Clara; two brothers: Tony Schmidt and Larry Schmidt; and three sisters: Barbara Schmidt,
Florence Gisi, and Martha Halvorson.
