John E. Beckler, 87, Bismarck, died August 4, 2011, at Medcenter One St. Vincent's Care Center, Bismarck.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 pm Monday, August 22, at St. Vincent's Care Center, 1021 N 26th St, Bismarck, with Rev. Ed Wehner officiating. Burial will be at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, with military honors provided by VFW Post #1326.
John Edward was born October 7, 1923, in Mandan, North Dakota, to Gregory and Justina (Leingang) Beckler. He was raised and educated in Solen, North Dakota. John attended a country school through the eighth grade. He was then in the CCC's for two years after which he proudly served with the US Naval Service from 1942 – 1946. John was stationed for 20 months on a ship named "Gillmore" in which he was a Gunners mate. He was involved with Navy Pacific Theatre. In 1943, he was wounded in action, shrapnel fragments in his knee and was hospitalized in the Aleutian Islands. He was honorably discharged in 1946.
John married Maryann Haux on December 14, 1957, in Bismarck, North Dakota, and in 1960, they adopted their daughter, Hollie Lee. John worked at Quality Builder's Lumber Company for 44 years, retiring in 1990.
John loved listening to the radio and especially enjoyed Loretta Lyn and Johnny Cash. He also enjoyed playing the harmonica. John proudly served as an honor guard for the VFW for ten years.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Hollie Lee Flannagan; his parents, Gregory and Justine Beckler; his second mother, Mary (Schantz) Beckler; and his brothers, Bennie and Ralph Beckler.
