Bernie H. Berger, 60, 706 Eighth Ave. N.E., Mandan, died of lung cancer, Aug. 2, 1994, at his home. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mandan, with burial in Mandan Union Cemtery.
Bernie was born Aug. 20, 1933, at Solen, to Marcus and Margaret (Kary) Berger. He was raised and educated in the Solen area. He moved to Mandan with his family in 1949 and did construction work. He started his own truck line, Berger Brothers Trucking in Mandan in 1957, which he still owned and operated at the time of his death. He bought a ranch northeast of Sterling, where he raised cattle. He married Betty Schultz at Mandan in 1959. He married Dorothy Leingang, Feb. 29, 1980, at Mandan.
He was a member of St. Joseph's Church and Mandan Eagles, Moose and Elks clubs.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Bernie Lee and Carol, Sterling, Brad, Mandan, and Bernie and Sue Allen, Mineral Wells, Texas; one stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Sherri and Greg Jahraus, Mandan; six grandchildren, Jessie and Michelle Allen, Jamie, Cory Marcus and Tanya Berger; two step-grandchildren, Chris and Lindsey Jahraus; his father, Marcus, Mandan; five brothers and sisters-in-law, Raymond and Betty, Stockton, Calif., Dennis and Coleen, Missoula, Mont., Jim and Lorna, Bozeman, Mont., Frank and Heidi, and Monte and Connie, all of Mandan; and four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Mitsy and Gene Washburn, and Sally and Fred Schultz, all of Mandan, Louriane Frank, Laurel, Mont., and Judy, Reno, Nev.
He was preceded in death by one son, Billy; his mother, Margaret; one brother, Lucas; three sisters, Gladys, Donna and Margie; and an adopted brother, Henry.
Honorary pallbearers will be nine special friends, Arlon Voge, Bill Dethloff, Clarence and Don Schwartzbauer, Al and Glen Schoonover, Ted Diehl, Kenny Berger and Don Whiteman.
Bernie stood for God, country and family. He believed a person to be as trustworthy as his word. He accepted his illness with great courage and choose to work over idleness, strength over weakness, and generosity over self-gratification. He was loved and respected, and will be missed by family, friends, neighbors and employees.
