Arnold James Silbernagel was born Sept. 18, 1932, in Napoleon, to Jake and Juliette (Heisler) Silbernagel and raised on a farm near Napoleon. Jim was educated in a one-room school house taught by his mother. He graduated from Napoleon High School in 1949, attended St. Johns University and Dakota Business School before serving in the U.S. Army in Korea. He continued his education at the University of North Dakota. He earned his doctorate of optometry from Pacific University, Forest Grove, Ore., in 1960.
Jim married Nadeane Reif on Oct. 25, 1958, in Prineville, Ore. They moved to Bismarck in August 1960.
Dr. Jim started his optometric practice in the Mid Dakota Clinic. In 1967, he designed and built the Capitol Vision Clinic at 1029 north Fifth Street. His brother Dr. Ken Silbernagel joined the practice in 1968. Dr. Jim retired from optometry in 1999.
After farming in Napoleon and Dawson, he bought a farm/ranch northeast of Bismarck in 1971. The family lived in town but could go to the farm to rake hay, chase cows and ride snowmobiles, motorcycles and of course, the horses. Jim made sure that all of the children had something to do whether it was at the farm, office, apartments or home. They never said, "We are bored."
In 1994, Jim and Nadeane became snowbirds in Mesa, having many good times with friends and relatives.
Jim was involved with the Optometric Association, Toastmasters, Knights of Columbus, Serra Club, Old Man's Breakfast, Elks, Eagles, VFW, American Legion, Moose, Farmers Union and Farm Bureau. Past activities of Jim's include chairman of Adult Education on the CCD Board, Parish Council and School Board at Cathedral, SMCHS Carnival as booth chairman, bingo caller, and kitchen crew, youth chairman of the Jr. Chamber of Commerce, Agriculture committee for the Chamber, Bismarck Horse Club, Discussion Club, Right to Life, Young Life, Jaycees, Stockman's and Angus Association. His honors include, Jaycee's Boss of the Year 1972, Napoleon Alumni of the Year 1994 and Knights of Columbus Catholic Family of the Year 1981.
Jim's hobbies included farming, ranching, horseback riding, tennis, playing cards, camping, hiking, biking, golfing, dancing, visiting, fishing and foosball. He was the most amazing dancer. All waited to have a dance with Jim. There was never a family or friend gathering without foosball, whist, pinochle or cribbage. Going to daily mass was very important to Jim.
The family often packed into the camper and traveled to Oregon, Idaho, Arkansas, Florida, Nashville, Wisconsin, Toronto, many other places and of course Medora. Jim and Nadeane had many traveling adventures to Hawaii, Italy and Spain, where they even ventured to Morocco, Alaska, Germany, Ireland and Medugorje. They made several mission trips to Mexico with the Volunteer Optometrists Saving Humanity (VOSH).
Jim is survived by his wife, Nadeane; his children and grandchildren, Donna (Joel) Fricke, Jacob, Adam and Teresa, Bismarck; Joan (Steve) Millner, Jana, Torbin and Matthew, Bismarck; Karen (Greg) Danley, Kalena, Eagle, Idaho; Dave Silbernagel, Jayde and Luke, North Powder, Ore. His siblings and nieces and nephews, Ken (Evelyn) Silbernagel, Kelly, Bismarck; Rosmary (George) Stelmach, Gregg and Janet, Paradise Valley, Ariz.; Virginia (Al) Feist, Rebecca, Sara and Rachel, Barneveld, Wis.; and his sister-in-law, Irene Conroy, Mary, Sheila, John and Erin, Madras, Ore.
