Lily Aman was born August 23, 1922 to Edward and Emma (Woehl) Aman at Freeman, SD. She was baptized October 22, 1922 by Rev. Zink and confirmed July 4, 1937 by Rev. Zogg in the Reformed Church of Scotland, SD.
Lily attended rural public school and graduated with the class of 1940 from Menno High School, Menno, SD. She enrolled in the South Dakota Beauty School of Sioux Falls, SD and graduated with a Beauty/Operator Manager degree in 1941, after which she began her own business, 'Lily’s Beauty Salon,' in Scotland, SD from 1942 to 1943.
Lily was married to Samuel P. Stahl, July 23, 1943, in Ottumwa, IA at the First Christian Church by Rev. G. Harold Roberts. Sam was serving in the Navy at the time. After his discharge, they lived in Chicago, IL, Freeman, SD, Mitchell, SD and finally settled in Sioux Falls, SD in 1958. In 1960, Lily opened 'Stahl’s Beauty Shop' in their home, which she operated for 25 years, until retirement in 1984.
She enjoyed crocheting and embroidering; gardening and tending flowers; canning meat, fruits and vegetables. She was a wonderful German cook and baker. She enjoyed visiting with family and friends, but she especially enjoyed the times her children and grandchildren came to visit.
In November of 1995, they moved to Dow Rummel Retirement Village in Sioux Falls. In her retirement years, Lily willingly and graciously was able to help close family members in their last years with financial and medical paperwork. Sam died August 4, 2008. They were blessed to have reached their 65th wedding anniversary. Lily was presently a member of First Presbyterian Church of Sioux Falls, and formerly of the East Side Presbyterian Church, where she served as Children’s Sunday School Superintendent, teacher and Vacation Bible School teacher.
Grateful for having shared her life are her one son, Pastor Darwin (Judy) Stahl, Ashley, ND; two daughters, Nancy (Frank) Monocchi, Bethany CT and Cindy (Tom) Thomas, Canton, SD; sister, Clara Jorgensen, Freeman, SD; 7 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren. Lily was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel P.; parents and one sister, Elda Stevens.
Memorials may be given to First Presbyterian Church (Stephen Ministries) and Sanford Hospice.
