SHERIDAN, Wyo. -- Wilma M. Kupper passed away at her home on Sunday, March 17, 2013. Wilma was born on July 27, 1920, to Wilbur E. and Angeline M. Freer in Dunn Center, N.D. She graduated from Dunn Center High School and Dickinson State Teacher’s College. While attending college she met follow education major William J. Kupper. They were married on June 28, 1941. After many years teaching in small school districts in western Minnesota and eastern North Dakota, they arrived in Sheridan, Wyo., where Bill had accepted the position of principal at Sheridan High School. Sheridan became Wilma’s home for the next 55 years.
Wilma spent several years as school librarian at Highland Park Elementary School and helped instill a love of books and reading to many children. She continued to be active in the community as a Life Link Volunteer, member of the Hospital Auxiliary, Chapter B PEO, and the First Congregational Church. She also forged and maintained lifelong friendships through her association with Homemakers Club and Sewing Club. Wilma was a tireless advocate for the rights of seniors as the State Coordinator for Community Operations for the western region of AARP. She especially enjoyed many years at the family cabin in the Bighorn Mountains.
Wilma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 49 years, Bill; and her companion of 10 years, Bud Benth.
She is survived by her daughters and their families: Kay and Dan of Billings and their children Courtney and fiancé Jeremy Wright of Portland, Ore., and Lucas of Billings; Jane and Jason Bowman of Casper, Wyo., and children Adam, Travis, Raya, Aubrie Doyle and Austin Bowman; and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her two dear cousins, Bethol Knutson of Dickinson, N.D., and Phyllis Knutson of Killdeer, N.D., and their families.
Wilma’s family extends their thanks to Grand Park, her home for the last three years for their devotion and care of Wilma, and to Synergy Home Care and Rocky Mountain Hospice for their additional attention and care.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service in Sheridan is pending. Memorials may be made to Chapter B PEO Scholarship Fund (c/o J. Conner, 4 Prestwick Dr., Sheridan, WY 82801) or the First Congregational Church in Sheridan.
