Birth: Dec. 24, 1908 Saint Anthony Morton County North Dakota, USA Death: Feb. 14, 2002 Bismarck Burleigh County North Dakota, USA Elizabeth Schafer, 93, Bismarck, died Feb. 14, 2002, at a local care center. Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Church of St. Anne, Bismarck. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck. Elizabeth was born Dec. 24, 1908, the daughter of Steven and Monica M. (Kupper) Martin at St. Anthony. She lived south of St. Anthony on a farm until 1926. Elizabeth was educated at St. Anthony and Mandan. She worked as a housekeeper until she married Joseph V. Schafer in 1927 at Glen Ullin. They lived on a farm south of Glen Ullin until 1934, and then moved to Bismarck. Elizabeth was a housewife and worked as a housekeeper in Bismarck and Mandan. She worked for A.W. Lucas Department Store in the sewing and drapery department. Elizabeth also took in sewing in her home. She loved gardening, sewing and her family. Elizabeth was a member of St. Mary's and St. Anne's parishes. She was a member of St. Maria Catholic Daughters of America in Mandan, St. Mary's Altar Society of Bismarck, VFW Auxiliary, Legion Auxiliary and the Eagles. She worked many years at the St. Mary's annual carnival. Elizabeth is survived by her four sons and two daughters-in-law, Steve and Kathleen, Big Sandy, Texas, Ray, Bismarck, Richard J. and Lynn, Bellevue, Wash., and Jim, Blaine, Minn.; one daughter, Angie Ding, Fargo; one brother and sister-in-law, Jacob and Minnie, Mandan; one half sister, Magie Kutzer, Washington; 13 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph, in 1964; three brothers, John, Dominic and Nick; one sister, Mary Knoll; and two stepbrothers, Pius and Al.
