Vera McKeone passed peacefully from this lifetime on August 8, 2009, at Hospice House in Omaha, Nebraska. Services will be held at 10 AM, Wednesday, August 12th, 2009 at Iles Funeral Homes ~ Westover Chapel.
A private entombment will be held Merle Hay Mausoleum.
Vera was born in Selby, South Dakota on January 22, 1919 to Harriet Preszler Geiken and Martin Geiken. Her family eventually moved to Davenport, Iowa where she attended Davenport High School graduating in 1936.
She married Anthony J. McKeone in 1940 and moved to Burlington, IA, before settling in Des Moines in 1954. Vera was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt, friend and colleague. She enjoyed working as the first full-time Director of Volunteers at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. Vera cherished the adult volunteers and delighted in development of the Candystriper Volunteer program for teen-age girls. Vera retired from Mercy Guild and later became the Activities Coordinator for Riverview Manor Nursing Home. In addition to her work at Mercy and Riverview Manor, Vera enjoyed affiliations with DOVIA (Directors Of Volunteers In Agencies), Des Moines Area Religious Council, American Business Women, Des Moines Women's Club, Des Moines Garden Club and Polk County Federated Women's Club. Vera enjoyed coursework at Drake University, Grandview College and the American Institute of Business.
Vera was preceded in death by husband, Anthony J. McKeone; son, Matthew McKeone and his wife, Linda; parents, Harriet Geiken Fude and Martin Geiken and brothers, Delbert Geiken and Norman Geiken.
She is survived by her daughter, Deborah McKeone (Omaha, NE); grandson, Shon Mckeone (Des Moines, IA); sister, Irene Burquest (Conyers, GA); brother, Alan Geiken (Sacramento, CA); sisters-in-law, Linda Geiken (Davenport, IA) and Lumen Norman (Dallas, TX); best friend, Charlotte Dyzorst (Des Moines, IA) and loving nieces and nephews and two grand-dogs.
