Well-Known Man Expires Suddenly.
Henry Bohn Sr., Town West Bend Pioneer, Died May 4 as He Was To Leave the Hospital.
Henry Bohn Sr., one of the pioneers of the town of West Bend and who for a number of years past made his home with his children, died unexpectedly in St. Joseph’s Hospital in this city on Wednesday, May 4. Nine and one half weeks ago the venerable man had the misfortune to fracture one of his legs and he was taken to the hospital. There his indominable courage served him well and the fractured leg healed. As he was about to return to the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. William Jansen, in the town of Barton, a heart ailment set in and as sinking spells came with frequency, he sank steadily until the final call came.
Mr. Bohn was born in the Rhine province, near Bavaria, in Germany on August 25, 1845. He came with his parents to America in 1854 and grew to manhood there. He married Miss Izora Wright on January 30, 1872, the wife preceding her husband in death, in April of 1923. After the couple left the old homestead in town West Bend they moved to West Bend and resided here about nine years and since the death of Mrs. Bohn the husband made his home with his children. Mr. Bohn was the father of sixteen children, six of whom preceded him in death. Those surviving him are: Henry P.M. and Walter of Milwaukee; Frank H. of Trenton; Charles O. and Arthur T. of West Bend city; Edward P. of the town of West Bend; Meta (Mrs. Gustaf Metzner) of Chicago; Daniel R. of California; Elizabeth (Mrs. Wm. Jansen) and Olive (Mrs. Alfred Reinders) of the town of Barton. Deceased is also survived by 23 grandchildren and by one sister, Mrs. Caroline Lorenz of Coquille, Oregon.
Mr. Bohn’s funeral was held Saturday, May 7, from the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Jansen and services were held in Holy Angels Church, Rev. Stehling officiating. St. Peter’s Catholic Aid Society, of which the deceased was an old and honored member, attended in a body. Burial was made in Holy Angels Cemetery.
The death of Mr. Bohn caused general regret in the town which he represented so ably for 22 years, as a member on the County Board of Supervisors and in this city where he resided after many useful years of farm life. Mr. Bohn was a man of exceptional character, a splendid husband and father and a citizen who at all times had at heart the welfare of his fellowmen. Always jovial and in a happy frame of mind he quickly won friends and the friendship which thus sprung up was sincere and lasting. Mr. Bohn was a remarkably well preserved man, who retained all of his faculties and his good cheer until a very short time before his death. He raised a large family and did it nobly and creditably, all being an honor and a credit to the father now at rest. To these children the sympathy of all who knew and loved him. Grandpa Bohn lived his life honorably and usefully. He will rest in peace.
