John Albert Dahl, at the age of 90, passed quietly from this life on Tuesday, December10, 2002 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
He was born September 22, 1912 in Karlsruhe, Germany to Friedrich and Rosina Huether Dahl. In 1933 he graduated from the Kant Hochschule in Karlsruhe, and was subsequently called to serve in the Swiss-German mission for the LDS church. On December 17, 1938 he married Betty Baier in Neurnberg, Germany. Their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on February 4, 1952.
In 1941 he was drafted into the German military where he was assigned to the signal corp. Because he was fluent in English he began work for the American military government immediately after the end of World War II. He became a liaison between the US and the local civil government. In 1947 he was called again to serve a two year mission in the West German mission, leaving behind his wife and two young children. He served as mission secretary and counselor to the president and had the privilege of translating for many general authorities that visited Germany.
In May of 1951 he and his family left their homeland to immigrate to Salt Lake City where he was reunited with his mother and two older
brothers.
He and Betty established a home for their family first in Sugar House and then in Holladay. In 1965 he became a student at the University of Utah to complete his Bachelors degree. He continued to earn a Masters degree and finally a Ph.D. in German. This led him to become established in his own business as an accredited genealogist specializing in research in German speaking lands. For many years he traveled to East and West Germany, Switzerland and Austria pursuing his research.
He began his church service early serving as branch president immediately after his mission and then every time he returned to be in his home branch in Karlsruhe. He continued to serve in various church callings serving as a high councilor and then as the first Branch President and then Bishop of the first German Ward in the Salt Lake Valley. Finally he became an ordinance worker and then a Sealer in the Salt Lake Temple. He also helped in the translation of general conference into the German language.
John enjoyed music throughout his life. He learned to play the violin in high school and shared his talent with others. He also enjoyed singing in and directing choirs.
He is survived by his wife Betty, daughter Helga (Rodney) Simonsen, son Rainer (Trix) Dahl, 13 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, sisters-in-law Elizabeth Strecker and Anne Marie Weiss and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father and mother and brothers Otto and Wilhelm. The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of the Marriott Brighton Gardens.
