Fred Zander
Fred Anton Zander Sr., 77, passed away April 16, 2008, in Apache Junction, Ariz., after battling a long illness. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 22, at Christ the King Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Rev. Albert Leary as celebrant and the Rev. Kenneth Phillips as concelebrant.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a rosary/parish vigil will be held at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church one hour before the service on Tuesday.
Fred was born Aug. 9, 1930, in Crown Butte, the son of Emil and Julia (Stein) Zander. He was raised and educated in the Crown Butte area. On June 12, 1951, he married Dorothy Doerr in Bismarck. Fred was employed by Corwin Churchill Appliance for eight years and 10 years as a body shop foreman. He then owned and operated Zander Body Shop in Mandan for 34 years. He never totally retired, staying involved in the family business by visiting regularly and giving advice.
Throughout his life, he had a hobby of collecting and selling cars. He was a lifetime member of the Eagles, Elks and Moose clubs. He loved to travel, camp, fish, play accordion and tell stories. Fred used his many God given talents as a woodcarver, silversmith, landscape painter, carpenter and gardener. Fred and Dorothy had been snowbirds in Arizona since 1979, where they acquired many new and lasting friendships. A highlight for Fred was spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, attending their many activities.
Fred's love, sense of humor and outgoing personality will be greatly missed by his wife of 56 years, Dorothy, Mandan; three daughters and sons-in-law, Karen (Irve) Wickham, Mandan, Phyllis (Myron) Rogstad, Bismarck, and Mary Ellen (Brad) Ereth, Mandan; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Fred Zander Jr., Mandan, Bruce Zander, Las Vegas, and Brad (Karla) Zander and Mark Zander, all of Mandan; 14 grandchildren, David (Desri) Rogstad, Casey Rogstad, Kristy (Doug) Kasper, Michael, Brent and Amber Wickham, Allison, Jamie and Kyle Ereth, Brittaney and Madysen Zander and Brandon, Heidi and Heather Zander; three great-grandchildren, Derek and McKenzie Zander and Gracie Kasper; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Lillian (Jack) Kautzman, Mandan, Linda (Dick) Broen, Bemidji, Minn., Diana (Gary) Handley, Grandbury, Texas, and Doris (Curtis) Dachtler, Davis, Calif.; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Gary (Flo), Mandan, Lloyd Zander, Fargo, Manuel Zander, Mandan, and Frances Zander, Mandan; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Lea Grinde, Buffalo, Minn., Melvin and Bernice Doerr and Irene Doerr, all of Bismarck, Almer and Marlene Doerr, Eagan, Minn., Roy and Cheryl Doerr, Minot, Florence Thor, Minot, Harold and Jackie Doerr, Glendale, Ariz., and Harriet Doerr, Dickinson; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant daughter, Susan Zander; one sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Tony Knoll; two brothers, Don Zander and Carl Zander; and four brothers-in-law, Larry Grinde, Emil Doerr, Marlin Thor and Reynold Doerr.
